Racetrack developers recruiting some help

AUSTINTOWN – Local contractors who want to get in the race to help build the new Hollywood Mahoning Valley Race Course will have an opportunity to get the details at an upcoming event.

Penn National Gaming, project construction manager Turner Construction Co. and the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber are hosting what they are calling a “community outreach event” 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at Cimineros’ Banquet Centre in Niles.

Preliminary site work for construction of the thoroughbred horse racetrack and video lottery terminal planned for the intersection of U.S. Route 46 and Interstate 80 in Austintown began last month. Crews from Independence Excavating are under contract to have the site prepared within 60 days. Work includes erosion and sediment control, construction of a temporary access road and sediment ponds along with tree and top soil removal. Penn National officials have said they plan to be open for business in the first half of 2014.

Penn National spokesman Bob Tenenbaum said the Jan. 17 event will be targeted at construction-related businesses intended to provide them with the bidding process.

”One area of particular emphasis is providing opportunities for minority and women-owned firms to be involved,” Tenenbaum said. The meeting will include an overview of the project, explain the process and answer questions.

A flier released about the event indicated that upcoming bid opportunities will include building concrete, structural steel, site cut and fill and site utilities.

Construction companies interested in attending should RSVP to Leslie Malov at 216-522-1180 or lmalov@tcco.com.

Tenenbaum said another meeting will be planned for a later date for local firms interested in providing goods and services to the facility once it is opened.
