Mon. 3:07pm: Howland home total loss after Sunday fire

HOWLAND – A house fire here caused $60,000 in damage over the weekend.

Twenty two firefighters arrived at 1739 North River Road to extinguish a fire on Sunday morning.

According to Howland fire Chief James Pantalone the fire was stubborn and took around two and a half hours to put out. The home’s occupants evacuated prior to crews’ arrival around 10 a.m.

Smoke and flames were visible from the second story rear of the building when crews from Howland, Bazetta and the Youngstown airbase arrived. Pantalone said crews spent a majority of their time overhauling the attic and the walls of the house through which the fire had traveled.

Damage to the house is estimated at $45,000 and to its contents, $15,000. A pickup truck next to the home also was damaged heavily.

The cause of the house fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
