Herbert E. Craig

MIDDLEFIELD – Herbert E. Craig, 98, a longtime resident of Middlefield, passed away on March 28, 2013.

Herbert was born in Warren, the son of Herbert E. and Ruth Craig.

He started a portable feed grinding business in Huntsburg, Ohio, and then moved the business to Middlefield in 1947 and called it Farmers Portable Service that he sold when he retired.

He and his wife, Lois, were married for 71 years. They had five children and lost a son, Bobby, in 1964.

Herbert believed in God, had strong family values and worked hard. He enjoyed life and did everything he wanted to do.

He and Lois took the family on camping trips when the children were young. After he retired, he and Lois traveled to Alaska and Hawaii, and they spent their winters in Florida.

He was a long-time member of Kiwanis and First United Methodist Church in Middlefield. Herbert enjoyed Methodist Men’s.

He was on Middlefield City Council, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a 4-H leader, and in the 1940s and ’50s was a Boy Scout Master.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; a son, Herbert E. Craig III of Nebraska; daughters, Mary (Donald) Stepelton of Florida, the Rev. Peggy Hostetler and Chick Treciak of Florida and Ann Seliskar of Florida; grandchildren, Eric Hostetler of Florida, Angela (John) Reilly of Illinois, Stephanie (John) Panagis of New York, and Suzanne (fiance Adam Axel) Seliskar of New Jersey; nephews, Clifford Craig of Ohio, the Rev. Robert McMillen of Indiana, William McMillen of Texas; and a niece, Linda Liptak of Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert E. and Ruth Craig; a brother, Thomas B. Craig; and a son, Robert T. Craig.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Middlefield, 14999 S. State Ave., with the Rev. Edward Peterson officiating.

Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Russell Funeral Service, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield.

Burial will be in Middlefield Cemetery.
