Man dies in police shootout
BOARDMAN – Boardman Police shot and killed a township man after officers said he fired at them from an apartment building window late Wednesday.
Daniel A. Fitton Jr., 30, of Cook Avenue, was shot and killed, likely by a police sharpshooter, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner News Channel 33. No one else was hurt.
Boardman police Chief Jack Nichols said police were called to the building in the 800 block of Cook Avenue to investigate a report that the man had used a gun to threaten his neighbors.
Nichols says the man had barricaded himself in an apartment, setting off a two-hour standoff with Boardman police and the Mahoning County Crisis Response Team. However, after failed negotiations, police threw tear gas into the building in hopes of spurring him to surrender. Instead, the man fired at officers, and they responded with gunfire, killing him.
Two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains said preliminary investigations indicate the officers followed procedures and were justified in their shooting, according to Channel 33.
This was the first shooting involving police in Boardman since 2006. That shooting involved an armed robber killed at the corner of Midlothian Boulevard and South Avenue.
