Fri. 10am: Valley man competing in National Senior Games

CLEVELAND – A Trumbull County man is among the 11,000 who will be competing in the National Senior Games through Aug. 1.

Ralph Degifis, 92, and registered to compete in horseshoes, will join athletes 50 and older competing in nearly two dozen events including basketball, swimming, shuffleboard, volleyball, golf and bowling.

Degifis – who is four months out from knee replacement surgery – has previously participated in swimming.

The venues include the new Cleveland convention center, downtown race courses, college campuses and a bowling alley that also will host a demonstration bocci event.

The opening ceremony this evening includes fireworks.

Among other notables to watch out for is 101-year-old Bill Finch, who is registered to compete in badminton and track. He is the oldest participant.

Ninety-nine-year-old Walter Westermann of Elyria will compete in golf and shuffleboard. He tells The Plain Dealer he likes to stay active and avoid becoming a couch potato.

Ralph is a must watch at 2013 National Senior Games.
