Fri., 4:13pm: Local site survives hurdle in missile defense bid

WARREN — Camp Ravenna Joint Military Training Center, with a substantial footprint in Trumbull County, is among the four sites picked by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency for an environmental assessment to determine if its suitable as a location for a ballistic missile defense site.

The formal Environmental Impact Statement will be conducted to identify a preferred location. The study should take about two years.

Other sites selected are Fort Custer in Michigan, Fort Drum in New York and Portsmouth SERE Training Area in Maine. A fifth possible location when the U.S. Department of Defense announced it was considering possible locations, Camp Ethan Allen in Vermont, is off the list.
