Shooter kills driver in Wellsville

WELLSVILLE – One man is dead following a shooting Tuesday evening, with his alleged assailant still at large.

Police Lt. Ed Wilson said that Taru Smith, 36, of Lorain, died after being shot several times. Preliminary reports indicate Smith was in an SUV on Clover Alley when someone in another vehicle opened fire, with between four and five shots fired.

The shooter was driving a late model white Mazda, which fled the scene, police said.

Smith drove onto 12th Street, across Main Street to the front of the police department, where his vehicle drifted into another vehicle according to reports. He was taken by ambulance to East Liverpool City Hospital, where Wilson said he died.

Police continued searching for the shooter Tuesday night. They did not have a name or description of the suspect.

Driver hurt in Brookfield crash

BROOKFIELD – A semi-truck driver was taken to the hospital on Tuesday after flipping his large truck on state Route 82.

The truck was driving east on Route 82 around 9 a.m. when it went through a guardrail, down an embankment, and landed on Route 82 westbound. The truck was carrying a roll of steel and was making its way to Wheatland Steel Processing. It took about an hour to rescue the driver from the cab of the truck, police said.

The crash is under investigation by the Warren Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. State Route 82 westbound was closed for about five hours.

A friend of the truck driver told Tribune Chronicle news partner WYTV 33 News that he believes the driver had a coughing spell and blacked out.

In another accident, traffic was backed up about an hour Tuesday afternoon along Route 11 near Tibbetts Wick Road following a two-vehicle crash. The state patrol is investigating, but said no one was hurt.
