Ride your bike to work Friday

BIKE TO WORK DAY MARKS THIRD YEAR: The third annual Bike to Work event in Warren will be held from 6 to 9 a.m. Friday at the log cabin in Courthouse Square. There will be a free continental breakfast to anyone who arrives on bicycle. All biker riders are welcome.

The event is to encourage people to be more physically active by bicycling for transportation. T-shirts and sling bags to the first 100 people.

CHAMPION PLANS COMMUNITYWIDE EVENT: Champion will hold its communitywide garage sales Thursday to Sunday. There is no need to get a permit to take part. Balloons will be placed at end of street and on mailboxes to let people know where sales are.

Gone Tomorrow Antiques and Collectibles, 5199 Mahoning Ave., will register people participating on a master list which will be made available to the public.

BUSINESS HONORED: Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley recognized its donors and presented Handel’s Ice Cream with the 2014 Champion for our Valley’s Children award at the fourth annual Champions for Our Valley’s Children dinner.

The event recognize those who have helped to make hospital events possible, including donors, volunteers, staff and community partners. During the past five years, the Handel’s “Koins for Kids” campaign has raised nearly $175,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley programs and services.

FOUNDATION PRESENTS GRANT: The Home Savings Charitable Foundation has awarded Second Harvest Food Bank a $10,000 grant toward the construction of a truck shelter.

The project will enclose the food bank’s three side-by-side loading docks on the east side of the warehouse to ensure that the bank’s delivery trucks and driveway pad will be less exposed to snow and ice; to increase the safety of employees and drivers making deliveries to the food bank; and to reduce the amount of drain-clogging debris blown into the dock area through the dock doors.
