Dunkin Donuts closer to tax exemption

LIBERTY – Liberty Township Trustees approved Thursday a resolution that clears one more hurdle for a proposed Dunkin Donuts location on Belmont Avenue.

Trustees Jodi Stoyak and Jason Rubin both voted in favor of the agreement, with Trustee Stan Nudell excused from the meeting. With their approval, the agreement will be forwarded to the Trumbull County Commissioners and Planning Commission, which will vote on a 10-year, 49 percent property tax exemption for the business.

If approved, it would become the second such exemption for a new business inside the Belmont Avenue Reinvestment Area, a 3.5-mile stretch of Belmont Avenue between Gypsy Lane and Tibbetts Wick Road that the state designated a community reinvestment area last year.

The proposed Dunkin Donuts will be built in front of an 87-suite Comfort Inn to be built where the old Ramada Inn previously stood on Belmont Avenue. The Comfort Inn was the first business to take advantage of the CRA.

Stoyak said that White Donuts LLC, a franchisee of the popular chain with 16 locations in the area, including the McKinley Heights area of Weathersfield, had been looking to expand into Liberty for some time.

“I’m hopeful that the community is excited about (Dunkin Donuts coming to Belmont Avenue),” Stoyak said. “(White Donuts) was looking to come here for probably the past five years, and they had just been looking for a spot even before (the CRA was established).”

At a projected cost of $1.2 million, the store is estimated to create seven full-time positions by its second year of operation, as well as 25 new part-time jobs.

Dave Dubiaga of the Trumbull County Planning Commission said that, if approved by the county commissioners, the agreement will then be forwarded to the state. After it is reviewed by the state, a process that Dubiaga said could take roughly two weeks, construction could begin in short order.

Trumbull County Commissioners will meet 10:30 a.m. Monday on the fifth floor of the county administration building, 160 High St. N.W., Warren.
